It’s January, and that probably means that you very recently had a visit from Old Saint Nick. We hope Santa was good to you this Christmas and brought you everything on your list. If he did, it’s time you protected those new assets with a list of your own – a home insurance inventory list.
If you’ve never made a home inventory list before, there’s no time like the present. A home inventory can help keep you organized as well as make future home insurance claims substantially easier. Here are some great tips to helping you create your home insurance inventory:
Home Insurance Inventories
Create broad categories for your possessions. These could be by type (electronics, appliances, collectibles, etc.) or by room (living room, master bedroom, foyer, etc.). Choose categories that seem the clearest to you. This will help make it easier to keep your inventory updated.
Keep a receipt file. If possible, gather receipts (or order confirmations) for personal property and keep them in a central location. Make a habit of keeping your receipts – especially for big-ticket items. Alternately, scan or snap a photo of the receipt so you can keep a simple digital file.
Don’t forget the garage. Items in storage may be out of site, but don’t leave them out of mind when creating your home insurance inventory. Remember to account for holiday decorations, sports equipment, collectibles and other items that may currently be stowed away.
Fireproof. Keep all items pertaining to your home insurance policy – including your inventory – in a fireproof box. Alternately, you may want to upload the pertinent documents and receipts to a cloud server that you can access from any location.
